What is an llms.txt, and why does it matter?
An llms.txt is a plain-text file at the root of your site that hands AIs a curated map of your content: your business name, a short summary, and links to your key pages. It is not required, but it helps ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity quickly find and understand what matters on your site.
Think of llms.txt as a table of contents written for machines. A normal web page is full of noise (menus, banners, code) that throws an AI off when it tries to summarise your business. The llms.txt cuts to the point: in plain language, it states who you are, what you offer, and where to find each thing. And it is not the same as two files you may already know. Your robots.txt tells crawlers where they can and cannot go (access rules). Your sitemap.xml is a full list of every URL for traditional search engines (an exhaustive inventory). The llms.txt is the opposite of exhaustive: it is a short, annotated shortlist built so an AI grasps the essentials without getting lost. It follows a simple markdown format: a title with your name, a summary in a blockquote, and sections of links. Getting it right is a cheap first step toward shaping how AIs see you.

What should a good llms.txt file actually contain?
The llmstxt.org standard asks for a simple markdown format: an H1 title with your business or project name, a short summary in a blockquote explaining what you do, and then sections of links to your key pages written as [name](url), each with an optional short note. You can add a section marked "Optional" for secondary links an AI may skip when it needs a shorter context. The point is to stay brief and clear: it is not a dump of every URL, but a shortlist of what matters most.
How do I check whether my site already has an llms.txt and whether it is done right?
For a quick look, type your site address followed by /llms.txt in your browser (for example, yourbusiness.com/llms.txt): if you see text, you already have one; if you get an error or a not-found page, you do not yet. But that check only tells you whether the file exists, not whether it is built correctly to the standard.
